The New Territory Arts Association
Benton Harbor, MI
Founded in 1998 in order to develop and promote The Benton Harbor Arts District, the
New Territory Arts Association is a grassroots organization dedicated to the revitalization
of Benton Harbor through the Arts. The NTAA has been responsible for many
special district events including the annual Arts District Banner Projects, The Fall Festival
of the Arts, the NTAA Mural Project, and the Benton Harbor City Market. The
New Territory Arts Association Scholarship Fund provides assistance with art education
for community youth by helping with tuition for classes at The Citadel Dance
Center, Water Street Glasswork's "Fired Up!" program, and other regional art education
curricula. The NTAA also sponsors The Benton Harbor Children's Art Fair and
other area arts related programs.

record, without any assistance. The sisters co-wrote five of the project’s eleven tracks and performed all vocals. Moreover, it’s the vocals that shine on this freshman
offering; bell-like clarity weaves with shimmering harmonies, creating a magic that is palpable. Finding Our Way was Chapter One in the book of dreams for Amy
Sherman and Julie Peebles (maiden name Mickey). “We both love our music and we love each other,” says Amy. “We believe we can do this and do it with integrity.”
<p><p>In the spring of 2006, Mark Duval emerged in Southwest Michigan from a 10-year musical hibernation with "Rhythm of the Rustbelt", his brilliant debut album, described by reviewer Dustin Walsh of Creem Magazine as "...the soundtrack to a summer sunrise over a dusty, forlorn Route 66."
<p>
His songwriting versatility takes the listener from haunted landscapes of brooding fingerstyle folk ballads to roots rock social commentary, shuffling blues riffs and latin grooves that show off his skills as a rhythm guitarist.

The band is a combination of some very old friendships (like riding the school bus together-style) and some very new ones.  <p>In the fast-paced setting of Eastern auction halls and commission markets, buyers could not see the fruit, which was individually packed in tissue paper and sealed in a wooden box. The brightly colored, attractively designed label soon became the growers\' chief advertising device and in essence the label was an elegant small poster. In wholesale auction yards, the more vivid, powerful and attractive the illustration, the better the produce would sell. Since the crates themselves were used as displays in stores, the labels were an important part of marketing in-store, as well.<p>Little is known about the artists who produced these images. Many of the artists were German immigrants who came to cities like New York and Chicago and attended trade schools to learn commercial art skills. They would often head for California to work for large printing houses that might have employed 100 artists who all worked anonymously. Nearly all paper labels were produced by San Francisco\'s tremendous lithographic industry. The original images for the labels would be painted with watercolor on paper or linen. From these originals, lithographs would be produced, on Bavarian stone and later on magnesium. The crate labels were usually printed on a heavier quality paper. They had to hold a lot of ink to offer the brightest possible colors to attract consumers at the market and to withstand the extreme change in temperature on refrigerated railroad cars and trucks while being transported. Label design concepts can be divided into three groups: 1) 1880s - 1920s labels were predominately naturalistic themes; 2) 1920s - 1930s the emphasis was on the health benefits from eating fresh produce; 3) 1930s - 1950s bold lettering and geometric patterns directed toward product recognition. This rich 70-year history of the crate label, that traces the social and political history of American agriculture, ended in the mid-1950s, when the wooden boxes were replaced by cardboard boxes with preprinted labels on the box ends. <p>All works are for sale.
